The difference in the first guitars and the more modern version stems directly in the pickups. The original guitar came equipped with a P-90 pickup and even a dual pickup later on. But the modern jazz guitarist found the humbucker equipped Gibson ES-175 to provide a richer tone overall, one that was more worthy of the Jazz musicians who came to know this guitar as the best one for their craft.

Today one could find both the P-90 equipped and humbucker equipped Gibson ES-175 guitars for sale as reissues directly from Gibson (the humbucker style can be found as standard, non-reissue). Meaning that if the guitarist wants to own the legendary guitar, he or she need not pay collector prices to get the opportunity.

However, the price for a new Gibson ES-175 can actually compare quite closely to the price of an older or antique model of the same guitar. The ES-175 electric guitar from the early 1970's could possibly even be cheaper than a brand new model of the guitar since that decade is not nearly as collecible as the previous two decades.
