I think that if I were going to purchase a vintage guitar, but needed to save as much money as possible in the process, the Gibson LG-1 acoustic guitar would probably be my first choice. And that goes double if you can find an LG-1 from around the 1957 model year. The Gibson LG-1 was a simple guitar with simple bindings to help keep the costs of production on the guitars down during it's run from the 1930's on. Because of the simplicity of this acoustic, you'll find that playing the guitar has a unique sound which differs from other acoustic guitars of the era which were built with more bracing. You could probably define the LG-1 guitar sound as "pickin and grinnin" in sound, with a bit of that twang in that type of music.

The Gibson LG-1 was a flattop guitar, so in addition to having a unique sound, the LG-1 guitar's projection ability is quite low. The Gibson LG-1, if playing for a public audience, will need to be used in a close quarters style venue or the sound will need to be amplified in some way. The LG-1 doesn't have the ability to be amplified, though, again allowing for some creativity in reproducing your guitar's sound.

Because the Gibson LG-1 acoustic guitar is no longer made, the only type available will be a vintage guitar, like the LG-1 guitars for sale below. If just beginning your research into this guitar, we highly recommend keeping your focus on the guitars in the model years prior to the early 1960's. The 1949 and 1957 model LG-1 guitars were some of the best quality guitars to come from this particular line, and so our recommendation is to check those first.

Gibson LG1 Acoustic Guitars for Sale at Guitar Center

Guitar Center carries restored models of the Gibson LG-1 guitar on their site, but of course at a premium to those available above!

All Gibson LG-1 guitars from these years will be in the typical Sunburst finish on a Spruce flat top (although you may find a few with the Sunburst having been sanded off completely). Mahoghany will finish out the sides and the flat back of the guitar, as was the standard. Pricing on the guitar will vary, as we've seen the guitar in absolute terrible shape to mint condition. Because the LG-1 was a bit cheaper than other guitars of the period, more people owned them, and so more are available. Unfortunately, having more owners available means less of them were cared for over the years, so you may find some extreme checking on the guitars available (outside of the mint condition guitars of course).

Collecting and playing are two different things altogether, so if collecting, we recommend looking at any LG-1 above $800. If you prefer to restore guitars, then anything below $650 is a good place to start. For those who want to play the Gibson LG-1, we recommend staying above the $550 price target. Most Gibson LG-1 acoustic guitars below this point will have some cracking, and are really only good for those who are interested in restoring this special flat top guitar.
